Designing in daylight: notes from the Lisbon studio

(Article)

Our studio faces west over the river. We review colour at the same hour every day, print everything, and pin it to the wall. A few rituals that keep the work honest.

Our studio sits on the third floor of an old warehouse in Santos, with tall windows facing the Tagus. The light changes every hour, and we have learned to work with it rather than against it.

Colour at four o’clock

We review colour at the same time every afternoon, under the same window. Screens lie in different ways on different days; a printed swatch under real daylight tells the truth.

Everything goes on the wall

Before any presentation, we print the work at actual size and pin it up. It is slower than sharing a link, but it shows us what the client will feel when the business card lands on their desk.

None of this is new. It is simply the oldest way designers have checked their work — and we have not found a better one.
