The brief
Folio publishes long-form essays on architecture and craft four times a year. The editors asked for a format that rewards reading on paper rather than scanning.
The approach
We built a twelve-column grid with a wide outer margin for footnotes and captions, and paired one text serif with a mono for metadata. Every issue opens with a full-bleed image and a single line of type.
The outcome
The redesign launched with issue 18. Subscriptions grew by a third, and the template now lets the two-person team lay out an issue in under two weeks.
